Last-minute sale at Christmas at the Cabin!

Folks finally getting to Christmas at the Cabin are in for a surprise, because many of the already reasonably-priced items have been put on sale for the final days which are Wednesday, December 8 through Sunday, December 12. The Cabin, which houses beautifully hand-crafted wares from artisans from across the USA, is a “must do” visit for many folks this time of year. (Some folks say they haven’t had their Christmas till they’ve had a visit to the Cabin.)

The Cabin is located just off of US 50, midway between Hillsboro and Chillicothe and 4 miles west of Bainbridge. And this week you can get in on a rare SALE at the Cabin. (Some artisans have put their items on sale for as much as 50% off!)

Winter 2021 ‘Happenings in the Hills’ available

The Winter 2021 edition of “Happenings in the Hills” is off the presses and available at area businesses; in addition, an electronic version can be viewed online or downloaded to your favorite device.

The new edition takes a look back to the very first Christmas at the Cabin in 1954, when newlyweds Janny and Boonie Brizius set up housekeeping at the cabin on Cave Road near Bainbridge. Later the Christmas at the Cabin artisan event was started, and it has served the holiday shopping needs of many area residents for the past 41 years. As Janny noted elsewhere in the publication, “There’s no cargo ship delays at Christmas at the Cabin.”

Christmas at the Cabin continues until Dec. 12, and special Thanksgiving night hours will be observed there from 4-9 p.m.

Cabin restocked in response to high demand!
So many new folks have discovered Christmas at the Cabin during this, our 41st season!

The Cabin, which had been so full I could not find an inch in which to put anything else that arrived to be sold, suddenly began to look a bit empty! However, a call to all of the artisans has resulted in many of them being able to replenish their stock during this week, and by this weekend, it should be stuffed to the rafters again.

If you have not yet discovered this unique Christmas shop, it is located on the CAVE ROAD, just off of US Route 50, midway between Hillsboro and Chillicothe and 4 miles west of Bainbridge.

How the Cabin came to be
As Christmas at the Cabin continues until Dec. 12 for its 41st season, a nice story appeared in the Times Gazette relaying the story of how the fabled Cabin came to be. And it’s quite a story, as it was built about 85 years ago by a 100-year-old man, according to Janny Brizius. Visitors to the Cabin seem to feel the love in the historic structure, and Janny loves to tell the story about how and why it was built.
The full story in the Times Gazette can be found at the link below:

Christmas at the Cabin is located at 7757 Cave Road near Bainbridge. Hours are: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. The Cabin also will be open on Thanksgiving from 4-9 p.m.

Big upcoming weekend October 15-17!

The third full weekend in October has long been set aside by many folks as Fall Festival of Leaves weekend.
Guess what, folks, that’s this weekend! And guess what else – it’s also opening weekend for Christmas at the Cabin!  You will not find a better festival anywhere that the one upcoming this weekend in Bainbridge, Ohio and Christmas at the Cabin is also on many families’ “Must Do” list.
Bainbridge, I think, figures that the new year starts each year with the Festival of Leaves, and nearly everyone in town is involved! And for 2021, it is back in FULL FORCE! Equally important in some folks’ lives is Christmas at the Cabin, which is 4 miles west of Bainbridge, just off of US Route 50 on the Cave Road, and you can really make it a big weekend by enjoying both this weekend, October 15, 16, and 17.
Following this weekend, the Cabin, which is chock-full of beautiful hand-crafted wares (all for sale) will then be open through December 12, but this is your one chance in the entire year for the Festival of Leaves.  C’mon out to Bainbridge and to Cave Holler for a fun time!

Get ready – get set – it’s almost
time for Christmas at the Cabin!

Whew, this year we had some major repair work to be done at Christmas at the Cabin before we could be ready for this the 41st annual show sale. The good news is, the repairs are done – now we can get down to the nitty-gritty (literally) cleaning this week before the crafters arrive with all of their wonderful new creations starting Saturday, October 9. That process will take all week thereafter and then on October 15, VIOLA! We open.
This authentic old log cabin on the Cave Road was built in 1936, and has quite a history which Janny Brizius, who lovingly tends to the Cabin, will be glad to tell you all about if you ask. Starting with the 100-year-old man who built the cabin. Yes, he BUILT IT HIMSELF! The fact that there were some major repairs to be made 85 years later are a pretty good record, I think. He knew his stuff. Little did he know that so may folks would still be enjoying his craftsmanship all these years later. These days the Cabin houses a unique craft extravaganza called:
Christmas at the Cabin features the hand crafted wares of many folks, both locals and from across the USA. All items are of the highest quality and priced very reasonably. Yes, they are all for sale!!! Visitors to the Cabin will find gifts for nearly every member of the family, some really special Christmas decorations and ornaments.
The Cabin is located on the CAVE ROAD just off of US ROUTE 50, 4 miles west of Bainbridge, Ohio. Opening on October 15, the Cabin will be open until December 12 on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM till 5 PM, Sundays from 1 PM till 5 PM and on Thanksgiving night from 4 PM till 9 PM. Y’ALL COME, YA HEAR? (You’ll be glad you did.)
Christmas at the Cabin accepting
a few new artisans for 2021 season!

Sad news for a few of Christmas at the Cabin’s long-time artisans turns out to be good news for some new artisans. Janny Brizius has received news from a few of her longtime artisans that due to illness they will be unable to participate in this year’s show. This show, which will run from October 15 through December 12, is all consignment. Artisans need not be present, but must be accepted for quality of their work and pricing. This show is known for the quality of the items and also the reasonable prices, so that is a must for acceptance.
Janny Brizius, who lovingly takes care of the show/sale in her authentic old log cabin on Cave Road near Bainbridge, will be able to accept a very few new crafters this season, and they can contact her by phone at (937) 304-0818, or by email at <dbbjjb@gmail.com>. She will need to see good photos of the crafters’ works as well as the pricing structure.
If accepted, each crafter will immediately receive notice of such as well as a complete artisan packet which will make participating possible. Time is of the essence though, so if interested in this rare opportunity, do not hesitate!
This is the 41st year for Christmas at the Cabin, which has become an area tradition. Folks come from near and far every year because they say they “have not had their Christmas till they’ve had a visit to Christmas at the Cabin!”

available in printed or online edition

The Summer 2021 issue of “Happenings in the Hills” has been printed and contains information about attractions and activities in and around our beautiful Appalachian hill country. Janny Brizius says this issue is a little different, as not too many activities have been taking place due to coronavirus concerns. As a result, Janny has devoted a lot of the new issue to the rich history of the area. You’ll find information about businesses from days gone by, such as the hotel at “the Point” where Rocky Fork Creek meets Paint Creek, and a story about the Legend of Lovers’ Leap, plus a lot more.

David ‘Boonie’ Brizius: amazing life and wonderful legacy

By Ron Coffey
One of the nicest, funniest and most caring individuals to have graced us who knew him passed away on Christmas Eve 2019. David Boone “Boonie” Brizius, devoted husband of Janny and her life partner in the Magic Waters Theatre, the Haunted Hills, Christmas at the Cabin and C.A.M.P. (Constructing Assured & Motivated People), dedicated his life to bringing joy to others. Boonie was a talented magician who loved bringing smiles to faces young and old. Boonie was also a devoted Rotarian and was involved in numerous other organizations that aimed to bring more joy and opportunity for others.
I had the pleasure of attending Boonie’s 80th birthday celebration in Gahanna. I think the year was 2014. What I remember most is the great crowd that showed up for the celebration. Many were graduates of the annual summer C.A.M.P. program that Boonie and Janny were involved in since 1956. The purpose of C.A.M.P. is to provide a faith-based environment that encourages campers to get to know God by setting the foundation for them to learn to love themselves, become more confident, and find their “Special Spark”; in doing so, campers are enabled to use their abilities to become leaders of the greater community.
Boonie loved working with other people and making them smile. He loved using magic tricks to make points about life. He loved telling jokes about his days playing football. He and Janny loved their Ohio State Buckeyes. Mr. and Mrs. Brizius had a life-long love affair with Hawaii and went there whenever they could. They loved the theatre and were enthusiastic about putting on a show.
It’s hard to separate Bonnie from Janny as they had so much in common. They loved the Lord, they loved their family, and there’s no doubt how much they loved each other!

Boonie will be missed by many. He was trulyunique and left an indelible mark on those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Boonie’s life took place Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the First Presbyterian Church, 457 Jefferson St., Greenfield, OH 45123.  A special vespers service took place that evening.
We found some photos of Boonie doing his favorite things with friends and family and have posted them above.
R.I.P. my friend.
